Week Three: Blueberries For Sal

Week three we read Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey:

When I got to the part where Sal and her mother were dropping blueberries into their tins, I grabbed a little tin and a pack of blueberries and demonstrated the noises the blueberries made as they fell in.  The kids took turns too and loved dropping them in. We made the noises as we did it. Plink plink. I was planning on using the blueberries for snack but the kids ate them very quickly... kind of like little Sal ;)
For our craft we painted blueberry bushes and used corks to stamp blueberries on the bushes with blue paint:

Our poem was called Here Is A Cave:

Here is a cave. (bend finger on one hand)
Inside is a bear. (put thumb inside fingers)
Now he comes out
To get some fresh air. (pop out thumb)

He stays out all summer
In sunshine and heat.
He hunts in the forest
For berries to eat. (move thumb in circle)

When snow starts to fall
He hurries inside
His warm little cave
And there he will hide. (put thumb in fingers)

Snow covers the cave
Like a fluffy white rug.
Inside the bear sleeps
All cozy and snug. (place one hand over the other)

You can download my poem folder version here.

On Friday we read the book again, recited our poem a few more times, and made these mini books:

They pasted little bear on each page per directions. The mini book came from these printables. (homeschoolcreations.com-- one of the best sites for Before Five In A Row ideas)
