Circle Time

Week Two: Corduroy

Our B4FIAR book for week two was Corduroy by Don Freeman:

We had a show and tell where we brought in our favorite stuffed animals.

After reading the story once, we read it again, this time using the story telling basket I had prepared.  I didn't take a picture of mine but here's one similar:

Corduroy Storytelling Basket. A wonderful addition to story time with preschoolers. Storytelling baskets are a fun and hands-on way for pre-readers to practice storytelling .

This took up most of our time on Tuesday because they wanted to play over and over again, each time each kid being a different character.

On Friday we made these super cute corduroy bears:

Using this template.  Just print each page on the desired color of construction paper.

The kids loved searching through our collection of buttons and choosing one for their bear.  They also loved seeing Corduroy come to life!

Week One: Names

The first week we read Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Mosel and The Old Woman Who Named Things by Cynthia Rylant, both books about names.

We talked for a while about each book, and about our names, our pets' names, our stuffed animals' names, etc.

Then we made poster boards with our names on them in big block letters that they got to color. You can see one in the background here:

We also practiced spelling our names with ABC Cheeze-Its (I printed and laminated each of their names in all capital letters):

And also with plastic bottle caps with letters on them that we fished out of a bin of water with a little net.  (Inspired by http://www.houseofbabypiranha.com/2010/09/we-play-name-soup.html). They really loved this:
